South Africa reduces COVID-19 quarantine days

BEIJING, July 18 (Xinhua) — The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

CAPE TOWN — South Africa on Friday reduced COVID-19 quarantine days from 14 to 10 with immediate effect despite surging COVID-19 cases in the country.

The decision was announced by Health Minister Zweli Mkhize who gave a virtual briefing on the country’s response to the pandemic.

BEIJING — Chinese health authority said Saturday that it received reports of 22 new confirmed COVID-19 cases on the Chinese mainland Friday, of which 16 were domestically transmitted.

All domestically-transmitted cases were reported in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the National Health Commission said in its daily report.

NEW YORK — The global death toll from COVID-19 has surpassed 600,000, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University.

By 0050 GMT on Saturday, the number of fatalities worldwide stood at 600,665, and that of global COVID-19 infections surpassed 14 million.

CAPE TOWN — South Africa on Friday confirmed 13,373 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, bringing the total tally to 337,594 in the country, said South African Health Minister Zweli Mkhize.

Meanwhile, the country reported 135 more COVID-19 deaths in th past 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 4,804, said Mkhize.

ISLAMABAD — An Uzbekistan military aircraft carrying COVID-19 protective medical equipment for Pakistan arrived in Islamabad on Friday, the embassy of Uzbekistan said.

The embassy said in a statement that the military aircraft of Uzbekistan’s air force brought 25 tons of humanitarian aid to Pakistan on behalf of the president of Uzbekistan.

NEW YORK — The number of COVID-19 cases in the United States surpassed 3.6 million on Friday, reaching 3,604,408 as of 12:34 p.m. local time (1634 GMT), according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University.

Meanwhile, the national death toll from the disease rose to 138,649, according to the CSSE.

SANTIAGO — The Chilean Ministry of Health reported on Friday that the number of confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus in the country has risen to 326,539, with 8,347 deaths.

According to the ministry, 98 new deaths and 2,840 new cases were registered in the last 24 hours.
